Why Granite is Popular

Only 20 short years ago, granite countertops were rarely seen in kitchens and bathrooms across the country. What caused its massive growth in popularity? Technological advances in the machinery used to cut granite stone evolved in the mid to late 1990’s and made converting raw granite slabs into the shapes kitchen remodelers needed easily and more affordable than ever before. How popular is granite? “We were spending $1.2 billion to $1.6 billion a year on stone counters”, according to Michael Reis, editor of the magazine Stone World.

The first thing that attracts kitchen remodelers to granite is the look. Visually, granite is an attractive stone. Being a natural stone, no two pieces look exactly alike. Granite counter tops come in many different colors and each include unique splashes of sub colors incorporated in the design, creating a visually appealing impression.

Another area that attracts kitchen remodelers to granite is the impact it can have on a home’s value. Some research has shown that it can increase a home’s resale value by up to 10%. An investment that appeals to many looking to improve the look of a kitchen or bathroom and also improve a home’s resale value.

For many years granite was only seen in the most lavish settings, palaces, 5-star hotels, and mansions to name a few. This imagery may have stuck with us and is a reason why we relate granite countertops to wealth and accomplishment. Only time will tell if granite continues to be a popular option.
